This level 3 qualification is at A-Level standard and provides students with a broad understanding of vocationally-related sciences to support progress to higher education or employment. Students gain a pass, merit, distinction or distinction star at the end of the course. Studying this qualification will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific principles and how science is used and presented in the modern world. It will also help develop practical skills recognised by higher education institutions and employers to be most important. The qualification also offers students an opportunity to develop transferable skills such as problem solving, research and communication.

In Year 12 students take 3 units. Two of the units are examined through examination and the third one is internally assessed. This involves completing 6 practical tasks and writing reports over the course of the year. In Year 13 students take another 3 units. Two of these are internally assessed and one through examination. Unlike other A-level courses students can take units at the end of Year 12 thatcount towards the final two year qualification. These units can also be retaken at the end of Year 13.There are 6 mandatory units, which are equally weighted (16.7%). Three of the units are coursework based and internally assessed. The remaining three are assessed at the end of the course through an external examination, including questions on pre-release material. The units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. The overall qualification is graded as P, M, D or D*.
