This is a qualification that enables students to engage critically with real world issues and places, apply their own geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to make sense of the world around them, and to help prepare them to succeed in their chosen pathway. What are the aims of the course? To provide an engaging and contemporary issues-based approach to advance the knowledge learnt in GCSE Geography. To support progression to many areas of study at university or college. To complete clear assessments that offer all students the chance to succeed. To encourage a holistic understanding of Geography so students can interlink their knowledge with the world around them.

Standard entry criteria: 5 GCSEs graded at 4 or above (counting 2 BTECs maximum). A grade 4 in English or Maths Subject specific entry criteria: Grade 6 in GCSE Geography and a grade 5 in GCSE English Language

Paper 1: 2 hours 15 minutes, (30%) Tectonic Processes and Hazards The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security Coastal Landscapes and Change Paper 2: 2 hours 15 minutes, (30%) Globalisation Diverse Places Superpowers Health Human Rights and Intervention Paper 3: 2 hours and 15 minutes, (20%) Synoptic investigation which draws on knowledge and understanding from the above topics Coursework: Independent Investigation (20%) The student defines a question or issue for investigation, relating to the topics studied. The student’s investigation will incorporate fieldwork data, own research and/or secondary data. The report will evidence independent analysis and evaluation of data, presentation of data findings and extended writing of approximately 3000-4000 words.
