This course will provide good preparation if you are planning to enter employment directly in the applied science sector. The first of three mandatory units you will study is Principles and Applications of Science 1; the second is on Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques; and the third is the synoptic unit of Science Investigation Skills.

The optional unit covers the Physiology of Human Body Systems. The evidence required for the internallyassessed units will support the development of a broad range of transferable skills. For instance, you will be given opportunities to write up the findings of your own research, use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations, carry out projects for which you have choice over the direction and outcomes and demonstrate practical and technical skills using appropriate equipment, procedures and techniques.

You will be assessed through coursework and controlled assessments.

You could go directly into employment or an apprenticeship in technician level roles in scientific research such as medical physics technician, pharmaceutical technician, chemical tester, biotechnology laboratory assistant. Alternatively, you could move on to onto further study towards a science related foundation degree / degree. You could also consider an applied science degree apprenticeship like those offered by Rolls Royce, GlaxoSmithKline and Unilever.
