Discover the learning experience and opportunities you can expect from this course.

This is an ideal programme for adult learners who want to develop practical bakery skills, gain industry knowledge, and take their first step towards a career in baking, food production, or hospitality. The qualification is designed for learners aged 16 and above and does not normally require previous food industry experience, making it particularly suitable for adults returning to education, changing careers, or looking to build confidence and employability skills. For learners interested in baking pathways, the course provides a strong foundation in the essential skills used throughout the food industry. Practical units typically involve activities such as weighing and mixing ingredients, shaping doughs, baking products, cooling and finishing items, and presenting finished goods to an appropriate standard. Learners also develop an understanding of food hygiene, health and safety, quality standards, and workplace procedures, all of which are vital in modern bakery environments. A key strength of the qualification is its practical focus. Adult learners have opportunities to develop hands-on skills while building confidence, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and time-management abilities. These transferable skills are highly valued by employers and prepare learners for employment in both artisan and large-scale bakery settings. Local curriculum planning documents also highlight the growing demand for skilled bakers and bakery staff, providing learners with positive employment prospects in the sector. The qualification can be tailored through a range of optional units, allowing learners to explore areas such as employability, enterprise, customer service, and wider food industry knowledge.

Find out more about exams, assignments and assessments.

Most courses are assessed via a combination of coursework, exams and practical assessments. Exams are formal, timed written assessments, carried out in a controlled environment and overseen by one or more invigilators. Coursework differs from exams in that it is usually non-timed and carried out independently. Practical assessments involve observation of your practical skills and competencies by a trained assessor.

The career options within the bakery sector can be divided into two types: plant bakery and craft bakery. Plant bakery is mass production and normally automated work that often goes on for 24 hours a day. Most bread products are made in this way. The main product of plant bakeries is bread, pre-packed cakes and pastries.
