The Sport (Coaching and Development) Level 3 course has been developed for students looking to learn practical vocational skills and gain knowledge and understanding in the coaching sector, centered around leisure and recreation. The course is also endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

5 GCSEs (9-4) including English Language and maths or satisfactory results (Merit/Distinction) in a relevant Level 2 qualification, an interview and a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Over the two year duration, students will learn from a number of units that cover the following: careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry, Heath, Wellbeing and Sport, developing Coaching Skills, applied Coaching Skills, a research project in Sport (set externally), Sport development, self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity, functional Sports massage, practical Sports application, fitness testing, fitness training, and rules and regulations.
A variety of styles are developed including formal class learning, group work, presentation and individual tutorials relating to the assessment programme. Learners will be required to secure a coaching placement in their second year of studying, in order to gain experience in a real-life coaching setting and meet the requirements of the qualification.
You will need to purchase general materials such as pencils and stationery and other items may be required that you will also need to purchase, but these can be discussed during your application interview or induction to the college.
Assessment is by course work and assignments.
On course completion, students could take trainee supervisory positions in sport and recreation such as: lifeguards, coaches, fitness instructors or recreation assistants. The full level 3 qualification enables access to higher education or a Bachelors Degree in a related subject at university.
