Access to Higher Education - Healthcare Professions

This course offers exciting opportunities for a range of degrees and subsequent careers in the health sector such as nursing, midwifery or other NHS related degree courses. Our students often find that health education and social care degrees offer the best opportunity to work in the community and on successful completion of this course, you can automatically progress on to the Foundation degree in Health and Wellbeing at Wakefield College. Choosing this course may help you gain the voluntary or professional experience in a health related environment which must be achieved prior to your UCAS application being sent in the following autumn term.

GCSE Grade 9-4 in English and Maths OR Functional Skills Level 2

Whilst on this course you will study a range of different units, including: Biology Cell Processes Key Features of Cells Cardiovascular System Homeostasis and Controlling Systems Human Anatomy and Physiology Disease Psychology The Learning Perspective Stress & Well Being Psychopathology Memory Developmental Psychology Health Related Studies Sociology of Health & Illness Inequalities in Health Context of Health Academic Studies Numeracy in a Health Context Professional Behaviour – Nursing and Health Professional Research Presentation and Reflection Digital Study Skills

Assessment takes place through course assignments and examinations. Each six or three credit unit at Level 3 will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Healthcare Research Methods and Study Skills are ungraded units but you must achieve a pass in these units to gain the Access to HE Diploma qualification.

The Access to HE Healthcare profession allows students to develop their skills in preparation for progression to university, students who successfully complete this course progress to study:

Nursing
Midwifery
Mental Health Nursing
