2. Who this course is for

It is a specialised work-related qualification that gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to prepare for employment, as well as leading to higher education and degrees of related areas of study within universities. The Extended Certificate attracts UCAS points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications within education institutions within the UK. This qualification is recognised by both Industry and Universities (equivalent to a maximum of 56 UCAS points; grades and equivalences are detailed in the table on this page ) and can lead to obtaining a place for Foundation or full degree programmes in a variety of fields. 

Students who want to continue their science studies in a vocational setting with a strong practical focus and assessment partly through coursework.

3. Entry requirements

At least one grade 6 and one grade 5 in GCSE Science.

4. What you'll learn

You will study a mixture of units and conduct a variety of practicals. The two Year 12 units are: Science Fundamentals and Laboratory Techniques. Both of these units are examined by external exams set by OCR and taken in June of Year 12. Each of the Year 12 units is worth 25% of the whole qualification. The three Year 13 units are: Control of hazards, Microbiology and Product Testing Techniques. All three units are assessed through coursework assignments which are marked internally and moderated by an OCR moderator. Each of the Year 13 units is worth 16.7% of the whole qualification.

7. How you'll be assessed

Examinations: all learners take the same assessment the same time, normally with a written outcome. 

Coursework assignments: learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a set of vocational tasks.
