No previous experience is required. This course is also suitable for those who may have already attended a Sign Language Taster or a Basics course. You will need to have the ability to move and manipulate your fingers and hands to make the appropriate handshapes, ask if you are unsure. You should also seek advice before enrolling if you have severe dyslexia or other learning difficulties. This 15-week British Sign Language (BSL) course in Deal is delivered in partnership with Hi Kent ( and leads to the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. If you want to learn how to communicate with Deaf people in every day situations or just have a keen interest in learning this language then this is the course for you. You will learn the basics to converse in BSL as well as the cultural aspects of the Deaf community. At the end of the course successful students should be able to: • greet Deaf people using British Sign Language and communicate about familiar day-to-day topics including counting, the weather, transport and directions. • communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language about people, animals and objects in the home. • communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language about interests and activities using numbers in relation to age, time, money and calendar. • communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language about sc

Understand how the course will be delivered.

The emphasis is on signed communication and Sign Language is used most of the time. A variety of teaching strategies will be used, eg. demonstration and explanation by the tutor who signs, repeated by the students, small group work and pair work, whole class exercises, videos and games and handouts to take home. There are no set text books for this course but students may wish to subscribe to online or other resources. Your tutor can guide you and you are advised not to purchase anything until the course has started.

Our BSL tutors are qualified as tutors in the adult education sector and all have specific links to the Deaf community. They use their BSL fluently in other workplaces and for social purposes, even if they are not Deaf themselves. They are committed to improving the use of BSL within all communities and can give first hand experiences to broaden students' deaf awareness and ability to sign with Deaf people.

Students who achieve the Signature Level 1 Award in BSL can progress to the BSL Level 2 as recommended by the tutor.
