2. Who this course is for

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering delivers the core and specialist principles of engineering to equip you with the skills required for an exciting career in this future-oriented sector. You will learn about aircraft, flying and flight systems, and, by the time you graduate, you will have acquired specialist knowledge in aerodynamics, avionics, materials and structures, propulsion and systems integration. You will also have the opportunity to follow an aerospace pathway of your choice, after sampling core engineering subjects.You will begin your studies at level 4 with core common modules. You will master the essentials, including mathematics and computer-aided design (CAD) which will give you a great advantage in the job market. At levels 5 and 6, you will gain more insight into subject specialisms. The programmes has been designed to give you the opportunity to explore practical subject areas and to engage in hands-on learning. You will be able to develop your own interests and projects in the field, and prepare for the range of responsibilities you can undertake in the future.Aerospace engineering is an exciting, cutting-edge field that opens up international prospects. Graduate openings are available in the research, design and development of civil and military aircrafts, missiles, weapons systems, satellites and space vehicles. Aerospace engineers also work in testing and maintaining aircrafts and systems, and in improving efficiency (speed, weight, fuel consumption). In recent years, aerospace engineering has oriented increasingly oriented towards sustainability, which is reflected by the many roles in the field that address its environmental impact.

3. Entry requirements

The entry criteria for Level 4 of the programme are:A minimum of 48 UCAS points (excluding functional skills) from one of the following:2 A-levels (or equivalent), to include mathematics and a technology, engineering or science-based subject a National Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma (or equivalent) in a science or technology-based subject, including passes in mathematicsThe entry criteria for direct entry onto Level 5 of the programme are:An HNC or HND with an overall merit grade in Mechanical, General or Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering (or an appropriate Engineering discipline).At either entry level:If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of at least 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills. Applicants who can demonstrate relevant work/voluntary experience instead of the above qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and invited to an interview to determine their suitability for the course.

You will need your own scientific calculator: we recommend the Casio FFX-91ES (costs start from around £15).There may also be additional costs to consider, such as optional educational visits and photocopying/printing.Relevant books, journals and electronic resources can be accessed via the College's learning resource centres.At the start of your course, it is highly recommended (but not compulsory) that you apply for student membership through a professional organisation such as IMechE or IET. Some organisations provide discounted student membership, while for others there is no charge.*Correct as at 2016IMechE - Affiliate Member*: No charge for an apprentice, college engineering student or undergraduate student studying a STEM degree. IET* - Students and apprentices (one year) £20. Students and apprentices (for duration of course, up to five years) £50.

7. How you'll be assessed

Most courses are assessed via a combination of coursework, exams and practical assessments. Exams are formal, timed written assessments, carried out in a controlled environment and overseen by one or more invigilators. Coursework differs from exams in that it is usually non-timed and carried out independently. Practical assessments involve observation of your practical skills and competencies by a trained assessor.
