Engineering the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. In an overview engineering is a study of how obstructions can be overcome by the application of mathematics. Engineering is a highly diverse area and the course is made up of a variety of topics covering a large range of engineering branches, to give an idea of future careers. Students will study a range of topics ranging from Health and safety to electrical, mechanical and chemical with an emphasis on mathematics.

A grade 5 in one of the combined Sciences or Physics if triple Science has been taken. A grade 6 in Higher tier Maths unless taking higher tier Maths alongside Engineering.

Chemical behaviours of materials in an engineering context. Mechanical Engineering ranging from moments to vectors to thermodynamics.Mathematics, Applied calculus, geometry and statistics. Health and safety with an emphasis on legislations applying to the employee in an engineering situation. Electrical principles with basic circuitry and a close link to electrical power regulation. Quality assurance and testing are also covered in a precision orientated manner.

Assessment is comprised of one written exam marked externally in Year 1 of the course and a series of assignments set and marked internally. Year 2 comprises of a task set and marked by the exam board, Pearson and a series of assessments set and marked internally by the tutor.

The course will also prepare you to take Engineering or a related discipline to a higher level. Or enter the world of work be it via apprenticeship or by employment independent of higher education. The course will also further your chances of entering the science industry in any applicable area.
