The Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science has been developed for learners aged 16+, who enjoy the sciences and want to learn how to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding in ways that are relevant to work. The main purpose of the qualification is to develop the scientific principles and practical techniques which, when taken with other complementary science-based qualifications, will prepare learners to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to food, human or environmental science. They will learn to carry out experiments safely and accurately when testing products to yield results that can be used to inform the next stage in a scientific process. Learners will also have the opportunity to collect and analyse primary data. This will better prepare them to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to laboratory science such as Life Sciences, Biological Science and Environmental Science.

Grade 4 in GCSE English Language, Mathematics and Science (grade 4-4 in combined science or grade 4 in each of the separate sciences).

Knowledge learnt in this qualification will create a solid foundation in the fundamentals of science that students will be able to build on in their further study through units including human physiology, cell structure and genetics. The above topics will be accompanied by a practical investigation unit, which builds on the knowledge and understanding obtained from GCSE Combined Science/Separate Science. This will include the use of microscopes, dissections, titrations, chromatography, fitness and health tests, and microbiology.

There will be teacher led lessons, individual and group project work, discussions and debates. There will be practical investigations throughout the course, in and out of the laboratory as well as films, videos and student-led presentations. You will be expected to undertake private study including reading widely, research, revision and homework tasks. There will be visits and careers talks from professional scientists in industry plus visits to hospital, university, and chemical laboratories.

Appropriate dress code for Post 16 confirmed during your induction and interview. Equipment necessary for your lessons (for example scientific calculator, pens, pencils, highlighters) A4 folders, note pads and an appropriate bag to carry A4 folders and equipment. Subject teachers will remind you about specific equipment when needed. For example sports clothing, mathematical equipment or any other items that will support your learning and progress.

40% exam assessed, 60% coursework assessed. Units 1 and 2 are exam assessed. Other units are assessed internally with coursework.
