2. Course description

The certificate includes three mandatory units and a further five specialist units: Mandatory units: Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Sector (externally assessed) – this unit covers the main types of tourism in the UK and the contribution that travel and tourism makes to the UK economy. Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations – this unit covers what the different types of UK destinations have to offer, as well as locating tourist UK destinations and routes. Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations – this unit looks at international travel and tourism destinations and reasons for their appeal to different visitors. Unit 7: Travel and Tourism Business Environments (externally assessed) – this unit looks at a range of businesses, and their structures and functions, in the travel and tourism sector. It covers how economic, visitor and product trends affect businesses in the sector and how they respond to these. Optional units: Unit 3: The Development of Travel and Tourism in the UK – this unit gives an insight into why travel and tourism is such a dynamic sector. It looks at developments that have shaped the sector, including how the UK travel and tourism industry has developed with changing lifestyles, interests and technology. Unit 6: The Travel and Tourism Customer Experience – this unit looks at the needs and expectations of different types of customer in the travel and tourism sector and how organisations address these. Unit 8: Promotion and Sales in Travel and Tourism – this unit looks at how promotion and sales are vital to business success, particularly in such a competitive and dynamic sector as travel and tourism. Unit 9: Travel and Tourism Employment Opportunities – this unit looks at how the travel and tourism sector is one of the largest and fastest growing in the world. It also covers the broad range of job roles and career opportunities available within the sector.

3. Entry requirements

Three to five GCSE’s including Maths and English, which can also include a BTEC Level 1 Pass in a relevant subject or a BTEC Level 2 Pass in a different subject area.

5. Assessment method

You will be assessed in a variety of ways. Some of these include practical tasks such as presentations and role plays. You will also be assessed internally through written portfolio work and timed assessments. Two of the 8 units covered in this certificate are externally assessed: - Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Sector (externally assessed) - Unit 7: Travel and Tourism Business Environments (externally assessed)
