2. Course description

The Health & Safety First Aid Regulations 1981 require employees to provide suitable first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. For employers to comply with this Regulation, their first-aiders must have a valid certificate of competence in First Aid at Work, issued by a suitable training provider. The syllabus includes: Understand the role of the first aider including reference to; the importance of preventing cross infection and the use of available equipment need for recording incidents and actions. Assess the situation & circumstances in order to act safely & promptly in an emergency. Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizures), administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking, wounded or bleeding, suffering from shock, cuts, grazes, burns, scalds and splinters. The course requirement is to have a good understanding of the English language, to at least level 1. Pen, notepad and photographic ID. Comfortable loose clothing and flat shoes. You should also be fit enough to give first aid to a casualty on the floor. You can undertake an advanced course which will provide you with the skills to administer oxygen, and the use of the defibrillator. Towards the end of the three year certification period, first aiders need to undertake another Emergency First Aid at Work course, to obtain a further three years qualification.

The course requirement is to have a good understanding of the English language, to at least level 1. Pen, notepad and photographic ID. Comfortable loose clothing and flat shoes. You should also be fit enough to give first aid to a casualty on the floor.
