2. Course description
Aerospace Engineering offers many fantastic career paths, including the design, manufacture and maintenance of aircraft. For maintenance, if you prefer the idea of a hands-on role, it requires practically-minded people with the opportunity to work 'up-close' on aircraft. Aircraft engineers maintain, inspect, repair and service aircraft to achieve EASA internationally - approved licenses and sustain aviation's high safety standards all over the world. Specialising in either "Mechanical" and/or "Avionics", qualified aircraft engineers work for airlines, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) divisions of aerospace manufacturers or specialist aircraft maintenance companies. There are also military routes whilst the General Aviation (GA) community, which spans a huge range of activities from Flying Clubs to Business jets (below 5700Kg) and airlines (above 5700Kg) also require qualified engineers to maintain their fleets. General engineering maintenance skills which can be applied to a variety of potential engineering career paths (not just the aviation industry). Units covered include: Unit 201: Working in Engineering Unit 202: Principles of Engineering Technology Unit 208: Principles of Maintenance Technology Unit 206: Using Bench Fitting Techniques Unit 209: Assembling and Maintaining Fluid Power Systems Unit 217: Fabricating Sheet Metalwork Plus: Support towards the GCSE Mathematics Support towards the GCSE/Functional Skills in English
3. Entry requirements
Minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade D or above including Maths.
4. Equipment required
The course is ideally suited to those interested in a career within engineering and for those who have not yet achieved but are studying for GCSEs in Maths and English, to qualify for entry to one of our level 3 programmes. It is important to note, that this is a 'general engineering' Diploma in Engineering and it is not guaranteed that its completion will automatically lead to a career in civil aviation. It will be guided and supported by experienced lecturers with many years experience in the aerospace industry who will not only provide subject-related relevance, but will also be able to offer advice upon career prospects. Upon successful completion (average grade of a Merit; 90%+ attendance and punctuality plus your Personal Tutor's recommendation) your may study at the College for the 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering at Level 3 - other options are available at the College (should you wish to change your area of interest from aerospace to one of those offered by other engineering disciplines) such as BTEC level 3 Electrical/Electronics; Mechanical; or Manufacturing programmes that can lead to an HND, university degree courses, Higher Apprenticeships or to career options within the armed forces. You will need safety boots and long-sleeved overalls (approx. £30) plus paper, a folder, pens, ruler and a scientific calculator. If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview.
