Level 1 Diploma qualification in a relevant curriculum area or 1 GCSE at grade 4 and 2 GCSEs at Grade 3, including English and maths at grade 3. Satisfactory interview and suitable reference.
This 1-year introductory qualification covers 4 areas of building services engineering: plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating and refrigeration and air conditioning. This course is suitable for anyone who is thinking about a career in the building services sector. You will learn basic skills in the following subjects: Plumbing- Copper installation pipework using a range of methods including pipe bending, soldering, compression fittings and testing for tightness. Heating and ventilation- Low carbon steel installation pipework using a range of methods including hydraulic bending, threading and joining pipework using hand stocks and dies. Electrical installation- Wiring an electrical circuit with a 3 pin plug, switches and lights. Air conditioning- Copper installation pipework using a range of methods including pipe bending, flared and brazing techniques. Alongside the practical activities you will also be introduced to safe working practices, environmental protection, the science of building services, renewable energy and the conservation of energies. On completion of the course you may be able to progress on to the Plumbing, Gas or Electrical courses that we offer here at Southport College.
Students need to wear reinforced toe boots at all times when in workshop areas.
These qualifications don't lead directly to a job, but they prepare you to start other qualifications.
