You will need a minimum of two GCSE passes at grade 3 or higher in maths, science or English Language. You will take part in a short interview to ensure that the course meets your needs and to ensure that we can identify any extra support that you may need early.

The course consists of 6 units. Firstly, you will develop practical skills in mechanical and fabrication engineering. This could include the use of practical hand skills, using a centre lathe, milling machine and welding and fabrication. You will also gain an excellent knowledge in engineering practices such as health and safety, working effectively and communicating technical information. The third element is to develop your Maths and English skills to support your learning and prepare you for

You will complete a range of practical projects and will be assessed and monitored throughout the year on these. You will also compile a portfolio of all of this work to show what you have learned. You will complete tests and assignments in maths and English.

After completing the Level 1 course and the required Maths you will be well prepared to progress onto the Level 2 Foundation Competence Practical Engineering Course. You will also be able to apply for an engineering apprenticeship standard with a local company as an apprentice. There you will then develop your skills at your place of work and to further improve your technical knowledge you will attend college.
