This qualification teaches learners to communicate with deaf people in British Sign Language on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. Units include: Introduction to BSL Conversational BSL Communicate in BSL about everyday life The course is suitable for learners who want to learn basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with deaf people, want to learn new language skills, want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment using BSL in the future, are studying for personal development, are parents, family, friends or colleagues or deaf people. Sessions will include a range of activities, including signing techniques, practice, mock exams and ongoing assessment.

Cost description | Course fees cover the full cost of the course. Full funding may be available for those who are unemployed, or earn less than £18535 per annum or who are aged 19-23 and don’t hold a first full Level 2 qualification. |

You must be aged 19+ This course can be taken without any previous BSL experience. Candidates must have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

Unit 1 is internally assessed. Units 2 and 3 are externally assessed. Students should expect to be filmed for the assessments. We aim to deliver this course in a face to face classroom setting. If situations change, you may need an element of blended learning using technology such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom. So, you will therefore need access to a PC, laptop, or other suitable device. These sessions may be full classes, or provide work set online to undertake during the session.
Please bring a notebook, pen and folder.
