4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English and Science and a GCSE grade 9-6 in Mathematics. Where you do not meet the entry requirements but have achieved GCSE grades 9-3 in English and Maths there is the opportunity to study the Extended Certificate in the first year to support the retake of these GCSEs.
You will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks. Compulsory topics for all pathways include: • Construction Principles • Construction Design • Health and Safety in Construction • Construction Technology • Graphical Detailing (Including an introduction to CAD and BIM) • Building Regulations • Building Surveying For the ‘Architectural’ pathway you will also take the following units in year 2: • Project in Construction • Building Information Modelling • Quality Control management • Conversion, Adaptation and Maintenance
The aim of the course is not only to extend the theoretical knowledge of the industry but also to introduce skills required for the workplace. Delivery is carried out traditionally in the classroom through formal and informal sessions, including practical and resource-based learning activities with tutorial back up. Working with employers, we aim to study local projects which help to extend the learning environment beyond the College premises.
Two of the units are externally assessed. Construction principles is assessed through a 90-minute written examination, taken in January or May/June. Construction Design is assessed through a piece of externally set and marked coursework carried out in a supervised environment. The remaining units are assessed through assignment work completed throughout the academic year that will identify how you applied the knowledge gained.
Further Study: Typically, learners progress to a second year to complete an Extended Diploma. However, some learners do progress to employment and return to study the Higher National Certificate on day release.
Career Opportunities: This course will enable you to progress your career into areas such as architecture, quantity surveying, building surveying, civil engineering and building services engineering. These jobs combine both office and on –site based activities.
